Kentucky
is a southeastern state bounded by the Ohio River in the north and the Appalachian Mountains in the east. Its largest city, Louisville, is home to the Kentucky Derby, the renowned horse race held at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The Derby is preceded by a two-week festival and celebrated in a museum year-round.
Kentucky was the 15th state in the US when it became a state on June 1, 1792 and it has an area of 40,411 square miles. Kentucky is from the Iroquois Indian word "Ken-tah-ten," which means "land of tomorrow." |
